The history of Huatulco is fascinating, starting with the origin of its name, which comes from a legend told since long before the arrival of the Spanish. They say that a bearded white man, dressed in a white tunic arrived here in what is now known as Huatulco. The indigenous people identified this man as Quetalcoatl (a figure of indigenous legend). This man introduced Christianity and set up a large wooden cross on the beach to be worshipped. When the Aztecs invaded the area, they called the place "Cuauhtolco" which means "Place where they worship the cross" which later became Huatulco. During the Colonial period it was considered the best Oaxacan port on the Pacific because of the easy access and the natural protection offered by the mountainous terrain that surrounds its bays. In 1578 it was attacked by the Pirate Francis Drake and in 1587 by Thomas Cavendish, who caused its inhabitants to flee and then sacked and burned it down. After this episode Huatulco became a small fishing village. During the war of independence on the 20th of January 1831 the ship Colombo arrived on the coast of Huatulco with a very special prisoner, General Vicente Guerrero. Guerrero was a statesman and the president of Mexico at the time. He was taken to the beach and turned over to the Spanish authorities at a place that since then has been known as the "Entrega" (Delivery). Vicente Guerrero was then taken to the City of Oaxaca where he was condemned to death and executed on the 14th of February of that same year.
